The Mitsubishi A5M (Formal Japanese Navy designation Mitsubishi Navy Type 96 Carrier-based Fighter (九六式艦上戦闘機)) was the winner of the Navy Experimental 9-Shi Carrier Fighter competition[1], for which Mitsubishi entered their design with company designation Mitsubishi Ka-14, which proved superior to the Nakajima PA-Kai.[2] It was a carrier-based fighter aircraft and the world's first monoplane shipboard fighter to enter service[3] and the direct predecessor of the famous Mitsubishi A6M "Zero". The Allied reporting name was Claude.
