History[]
One of 36 Grumman Martlet aircraft acquired by direct order for British Purchasing Commission, under Grumman Job No 127,[1] AM975 was allocated to 881 Naval Air Squadron RCN[2] aboard HMS Illustrious. On 21 December 1941, the aircraft forced landed half mile south of Carrigans, County Donegal, Eire, during a ferry flight, resulting in the pilot, S/Lt Bruce Nathanial Girdlestone RNZN,[3] being interned.[4]
The final fate of the aircraft is not recorded.
